2014 in sketch form!

2014 has been a CRAZY year!
Full of Highs and Lows, ups and Downs (and a few Lefts and Rights that caught me by surprise)! I did more Cons this year than I ever had before and I felt that was a major milestone for me professionally.

I feel the best way to Illustrate that is by showcasing the various convention sketches I did through out the year.

Most done with a #4  mechanical pencil, some were done in as little as 30 minutes. Sorry for the quality on some of the images, they were taken by my phone under a variety of lighting conditions.

30 minute Kakashi came out better than I'd hoped.
I'm missing a couple I did at EmCon, so if you have any photos of them, please reach out to me.
New years resolution #1 Keep better records!

New years Resolution #2 Start carrying pens to Cons so I can ink these things!

Thank you all for your support, and thank you for your patience. This is the quiet time between convention seasons so I'm using the time to catch up on several much delayed commissions on top of some RPG work (more on that soon) and four(!) comics projects so I've never been busier, and it feels awesome! It's been a great year!

Wolverine Deadpool Update

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates, I've been in fighting deadlines for the past month. Now to kick off the post summer run-up to NYCC here's the final inked version of the Weapon X Showdown roughs I posted a month or so back. I made quite a few changes from the original sketch to make what I feel is an overall stronger composition.
Overall, it's still not what I'd call a "great" composition. We get Wolvie's back and Deadpool's arm covers up a large amount of his torso, but hopefully the overall energy of the scene will make up for that. Or maybe I'm just being way to critical......  Oh well, let me know what you guys think.

Woverine vs Deadpool WiP

I often get requests for more Marvel characters so I figured I'd tackle two fan-favorites. This is taking me a little longer than usual as I'm working around 90% digitally as opposed to my usual 60-40 hybrid method. If I can get it set up I may stream or record the coloring stage. When it's finished it'll be available as a full color 11x17 print at #2Biggs Studio.

Buraiden Character Preview

Here's an "inked sketch" of Anabeth Almeida or Annan, or Aurelia...still tossing the surname around. (May just drop the "A.A." convention altogether to avoid the inevitable jokes) Without giving too much away I can say that Anabeth is one of the principal characters of the story as Buraiden is very much her "Hero's Journey". She's a teenager and sort of a fish out of water, so I wanted her outfit to be more fashion magazine, less fantasy novel. Still have a few detailes to iron out with her. Stay tuned for more Character previews and more detailed bios over the next week.

Buraiden pages!

Hey guys, thought I'd share my rough pencils for a page from the upcoming chapter. I recently switched to non-reproducing blue pencils as an experiment, and pre-ruled 11x17 boards as it saves time because I don't have to futz with re-sizing and templates as much. . I'm fairly satisfied with the results. Main problems are difficulty scanning ( luckily I have a friend with a large bed scanner), and it's hard to find non-repro blue leads for mechanical pencils. Getting the level of precision I like means I'm stopping every minute or so to sharpen the pencil, it's driving me crazy!

Power of the Nova Force!

Here's the finished Nova pic I teased about a month or so ago! This was a blast to work on as he's one of my all-time favorites. I've actually read the new Nova series and I dig it, just sad to see R.R.
missing in action.

Shazam!

I can't talk enough about my positive experiences at EternalCon and the awesome people I met there. Thank you so much guys. Here's a commission I did Saturday of Captain Marv...I mean Shazam! (that's going to take some getting used to) It didn't quite come out the way I wanted because the client was pressed for time, and my own lack of sleep. I like the pose though, I may do something more with it.

EternalCon is one of my favorite conventions. The location is absolutely awesome and the people are amazing! I was blown away by the sheer enthusiasim of the crowd and amazed at the professionalism of the staff. they manage to run things smoothly and are still personable at the same time.I had a blast again this year and can't wait for next year. Thank you to everyone who came out to say hi, and for all the kind words and compliments, they make me want to step my game up even more!
Public Enemy Obi-Wan, Me and P-Diddy! Shoutouts to the Empire Saber Guild!

The only Guardian the Galaxy needs! One of my all-time favs, hoping he makes a return to comics soon.

This is just a sample, the full pic will be available this Saturday at Gateway-Con!

First Lady of Fighting Games

More Street Fighter goodness for Gateway-Con! If you like what you see, be sure to stop by, I'll have the fully colored version available at my table! I find it interesting that her hairstyle is referred to as "Chun-Li buns", they used to be called "Leia buns" showing that she's crossed over into popular culture. I wonder if she'll go on to become a female icon like Wonder Woman.

All Hail the King!

GatewayCon!

GatewayCon is back for our third year! GatewayCon is a mini-con run by myself and my students, put together primarily to showcase their art that has begun to evolve into a celebration of Anime and comic culture! We have quite a few special guests lined up for an awesome Artists's Alley and more! I'm really excited for the Cosplay Contest. Also, the Magic and Yu-gi-oh! tournaments should bring out some killers trying to win that prize money! I'll be there selling prints and taking commissions. It's on Saturday April 26th at the Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers, N.Y. Stop by, it'll be great family friendly fun!

Buraiden Warm Up

Here are some Buraiden silhouette tests I did as a warm up exercise. I use these to make sure
I'm not repeating the same "themes" overmuch while still maintaining the integrity of the shared world the characters inhabit. These were done with a ball point pen and I intentionally spent no more than 5 or so minutes on each. You can see several of the main characters along with some new ones that I came up with on the spot. Stay tuned for more info soon.

Spaghetti Space Western

An homage to one of my favorite movie series, using some of my favorite characters. After the starfighter pilots, I identify with the Bounty Hunters the most. I would love to do a Space Western comic about these guys trying to outmaneuver each other in search of some Space McGuffin. Lucas, hire me! (Although I'd probably have to go through Disney now.)
Here's Jango being all business.

Cad Bane being deadly serious.

And Bossk being.... umm....Bossk.

Color Theory...My Nemesis

Here's a few potential palettes for a character from Buraiden. Trying trying to work out a balance between character identity and over all color harmony. Decisions, decisions....

Back for the New Year

Welcome to 2014!  Hi guys, It's been a while. I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season.
I apologize for the lack of updates. I had a big project due that ran smack into the craziness of the holiday season with it's usual drama. But now that's all sorted out and I'm back to give you some artsy-goodness.
Over the holidays I collaborated with Derek Adnams over at Devastating Roulette Studios on "The Fuhrer's Dagger" that will be appearing in Indie Comics Magazine #8. It was a lot of fun, Derek's a hell of a writer and Brandon Bullock did a great job on the lettering.
Here's a sample:
